Top Jobs for Bachelor's degree in Psychology

In the four years that I have graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I have worked several jobs. From cashier at McDonald's to call center representative for a pharmaceutical company. All the while, I had no idea what kind of jobs I should be looking for. Today, I am going to share with you the things that nobody bothered to share with me to make your job search a little easier. This way you will know what kind of jobs to look for to further your career in psychology and make decent money as well. I do have one disclaimer though. One thing I have learned in my job searches is that for you to make good money in psychology, you need a Master's Degree or higher. You can not work jobs like counselor, or psychologist without a Master's Degree, PhD or at least some kind of certification. With that being said, let's talk business...

1. Teacher's Assistant: Notice I did not say "teacher". That is because to be a teacher you need some sort of license or teaching credentials. I am trying to give you an idea of what kind of jobs you can work with what you have at your disposal, namely a Bachelor's Degree in psychology and nothing else. A teaching assistant (or a TA for short) is a person who supports the teacher in the classroom. The duties of the job may vary from school to school. This job utilizes the psychology graduate's knowledge of learning styles, childhood and early development (depending on what grade you assist in teaching) and social psychology. According to payscale.com, you will make an average of $11.33/hour as a teaching assistant in Sacramento, CA. Go to google to search your potential salary in other localities.

2. Child Care Worker: A child care worker is a term used for a person who manages young people. I have worked as a child care worker in a group home with adolescent boys. This job paid me $9.50/hour which is a dollar more than minimum wage in California. The good thing is that these jobs are looking for people with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. You will find that you may not even need work experience as long as you have the degree. The bad thing is, it doesn't pay much although there are pay increases if you stick with the job long enough.

3. Social worker: As a social worker, your average wage would be $16.47/hour in Sacramento, CA according to payscale.com. A social worker is a professional who works with people to help them with emotional, financial, insurance and other resources that they may need during a critical period. For example, they may deal with runaway children, victims of abuse or sexual violence, people in poverty, etc.

4. Caregiver/Home health aide: I have done the job as well. Basically, the job entails that you support people in hospice or who are confined to their home due to illness. I worked primarily with the elderly. You may have duties such as giving a sponge bath, administering enemas, dispensing medication, rubbing ointment, supporting patient when they walk, light housekeeping, food preparation and others. According to payscale.com your the average wage for this position is $13.93/hour.

5. Human Resources Assistant: Human resource assistants keep records of a company's employees. Everyday they update information and answer questions about employees. They also may create reports for managers. Some human resource assistants answer the phone or open mail. Some help to hire workers. They sometimes to research on the internet to find qualified applicants for jobs. They call or write applicants to tell them whether or not they got the job. According to payscale.com human resource assistants make an average of $14.67/hour. You must have good computer skills for this job.

There are lots of other jobs that a person with a Bachelor's degree in psychology can do including:

  • Office Assistant for a Psychiatrist's office
  • Behavioral tutor for Children with Autism
  • Marketing Representative
  • Customer service representative
  • Call center representative

And many more. What are your opinions? Do you have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology? What type of jobs have you worked? Which jobs are the best? Leave a comment, and I'll be sure to reply! :-)

~::*EDIT*::~
I have to edit this article to include some excellent suggestions given by a commenter named "Kelly S". She advises people to try the following:

  • Community relations officer,
  • affirmative action officer,
  • recreation worker,
  • urban planning officer,
  • Personal Administration,
  • Advertising,
  • Health Educator,
  • Vocational Rehabilitation,
  • Psychiatric Assistant,
  • Director of Volunteer Service,
  • Public Statistician,
  • customs inspector,
  • Probation/parole officer,
  • Newspaper reporter in terms of socialogy/psychology related stories,
  • or daycare center supervisor.

I hope that helps! And I would like to add that in any position in which you are managing other people (e.g. manager, shift supervisor, etc.) you can color your resume with mentions of the fact that you studied human behavior and are skilled in conflict resolution, crisis management, groupthink and motivation.

Don't be discouraged by the lack of signs out there that specifically say "Psych Students Welcome". Sell yourself! Do your research! Figure out what kind of job you want to do and find out what it takes for you to get it. And just because the job you want is not available in your area, doesn't mean they're not available. Move if you have to!

The Average Salary With a Bachelor's in Nursing

A BSN teaches nurses to employ critical thinking skills in their profession.

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a degree for professional nurses, such as registered nurses, who want to improve their nursing skills and broaden their nursing practice. It is available as a four-yThe Average Salary With a Bachelor's in Nursingthumbnail ear program in many colleges, universities and professional nursing schools. A BSN can improve salaries because it opens the holder to added responsibility and more types of nursing jobs.

  1. Jobs

    • The primary factor in deciding salaries for BSNs is the job title, since that dictates actual duties and responsibilities. For example, professional nurses, who commonly pursue this degree to improve their careers, make a median $56,234 per year. Directors of nursing, who are in charge of an entire department of subordinate health care professionals, earn the highest salaries at $78,347 annually. An RN in an operating room makes $66,063. This is higher than a standard RN, because those in operating rooms have the added responsibility of caring for surgical patients who may be in critical health situations. This is according to PayScale as of January 2011.

    Experience

    • Salaries increase with experience as BSNs develop more skill and understanding of their jobs and a wider reputation among other health care professionals. New employees make a median $48,884 per year, while those with one to four years of work earn $55,732. At five to nine years of experience, they earn $64,071, and at 10 to 19 years, they get $67,689. At 20 or more years of experience, they top out at $72,182.

    Employers

    • The type of employer affects salaries with those in the federal government receiving the highest wages at $66,593 per year, followed by those in hospitals at $66,249 annually. At the opposite end of the scale are schools and school districts that pay $46,467 and medical franchises that offer $53,513. Those who are self-employed receive $65,000, while those working for nonprofit organizations get $64,868.

    Certifications

    • Certifications can enhance salaries because they are documentation that the holder can perform specific tasks at industry-accepted standards. The most valuable of these is the Certified Nurse, Operating Room, which signifies skill in helping surgeons with life-or-death operations. This knowledge pays a median $79,218 per year. Advanced Cardiac License Support enables BSNs to handle the special needs of heart patients in critical conditions. This skill garners $63,217 yearly. Even basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which can save the lives of patients in heart attacks, is a credential that earns $59,402 annually.

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet Features

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1's beautiful 1,280x800-pixel screen is great for watching movies. The Honeycomb tablet supports WMV9, WMV7, WMV8, H.264, MPEG4, Xvid, DivX, H.263, and VP8 video codecs. If your movie isn't already in one of the supported formats or it's still on a DVD, you'll need to encode/re-encode it first. Here's how:

Step 1: Download and install HandBrake.

Step 2: Click on the Source button, and select your movie. For DVDs, select "Folder" then select the "VIDEO_TS" folder from your DVD drive. HandBrake does not rip or decrypt DVDs, so you may need use your favorite DVD software to rip your DVD first.

Select source movie (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee)

Step 3: Make sure that the container is set to "MP4 File" and that the check box next to Large file size is checked. In the "Picture" tab, make sure that Anamorphic is set to "Loose" and that Modulus is set at "16." For standard definition movies, the Width: setting is "720." For high-definition movies, change the width to "1280."

Picture settings (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee)

Step 4: In the "Video" tab, the video codec should be "H.264 (x264)" and Framerate (FPS) should be "Same as source." For Quality, select "Constant Quality" at "RF:20." For HD movies, use the slider to move the quality to "RF:22."

Step 5: In the "Audio" tab, choose "Stereo" for Mixdown and make sure that Samplerate is at "48" and Bitrate is at "160."

Step 6: In the "Advanced" tab, choose the following settings in the Encoding and Analysis sections:

  • Reference Frames: 4
  • Maximum B-Frames: 0
  • CABAC Entropy Coding: unchecked
  • 8x8 Transform: unchecked
  • Weighted P-Frames: unchecked
  • Motion Estimation Method: Default (Hexagon)
  • Subpixel ME & Mode Decision: 7: RD in all frames
Advanced settings (Credit: Screenshot by Ed Rhee)

Step 7: If you have QuickTime or the VLC media player installed, you can click the Preview button to see what the encoded video will look like. If you're happy with it, click the Start button to begin encoding your movie.

Step 8: Once the encoding task completes, plug your Galaxy Tab 10.1 into your computer using the USB data cable, then copy the file to /Root/Movies. In theory, the movie should show up in the Gallery app but we couldn't get it to appear consistently. Instead, we used the My Files app to go directly to the file location and launch it from there.

There, now you know how to get movies onto your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 so you can watch them on that gorgeous screen! Keep in mind that some of the settings can be tweaked to improve the video quality but it's a balance between quality and size. Using the settings we suggested, a 74MB QuickTime file encoded to a 22MB MP4 file and a 90-minute DVD encoded to about a 1.2GB MP4 file. If you run out of internal storage, consider getting the Galaxy Tab USB adapter, which allows you to use attach an external USB flash drive. Enjoy the show!

Ford Focus Electric to come with home solar option

By Ford, Wieck
For the environmentally conscious who think driving an electric car isn't doing enough, there'll be a chance to go solar at the same time.

Ford is announcing that it is teaming with an established solar provider, SunPower, to sell a solar energy system through Ford dealers in conjunction with the Focus electric sedan that goes on sale later this year.

By SunPower
Solar panels, to be mounted on the car owner's house, wouldn't necessarily directly charge the electric car's batteries.

Rather, they would provide juice from the sun to the house equal to offset about 1,000 miles of driving a month in the electric Focus, a plug-in version of the new compact sedan. Electric cars are typically recharged overnight.

"In effect, you are driving a solar-powered car," says SunPower CEO Tom Werner. He says his customers are always commenting, "Wouldn't it be cool if I could power my car?"

To generate enough solar power for an electric-car offset, the system will have about 147 square feet of roof panels — about 11 panels that are 4 feet by 2 feet:

The 2.5-kilowatt system will produce about 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year.

The option will be offered by Ford dealers to Focus electric buyers, but will be a pricey option: about $10,000 after federal tax credits. Best Buy's Geek Squad, with which Ford already has a deal to install home chargers, can perform the solar installation.

Ford hasn't announced the price of the 2012 Focus electric yet. It goes on sale in California and New York later this year, beginning a gradual rollout nationwide into next spring.

The solar power option could get a good reception among environmentalist buyers who have figured out that even driving a plug-in EV isn't truly green because electricity is often made by burning fossil fuels at power plants.

"To have a scenario where you know you are offsetting (the electricity) used in your car, that's pretty attractive," says Ron Cogan, publisher of the Green Car Journal.

The new partnership lets Ford burnish its "green" image with the solar angle and gives SunPower, based in San Jose, Calif., a new batch of potential customers.

"It's pretty brilliant marketing," Cogan says. Not only does it help broaden electric car appeal, "it's going to introduce a whole new crowd of people to solar power who might not have gone there otherwise."
