Top Jobs for Bachelor's degree in Psychology

In the four years that I have graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I have worked several jobs. From cashier at McDonald's to call center representative for a pharmaceutical company. All the while, I had no idea what kind of jobs I should be looking for. Today, I am going to share with you the things that nobody bothered to share with me to make your job search a little easier. This way you will know what kind of jobs to look for to further your career in psychology and make decent money as well. I do have one disclaimer though. One thing I have learned in my job searches is that for you to make good money in psychology, you need a Master's Degree or higher. You can not work jobs like counselor, or psychologist without a Master's Degree, PhD or at least some kind of certification. With that being said, let's talk business...

1. Teacher's Assistant: Notice I did not say "teacher". That is because to be a teacher you need some sort of license or teaching credentials. I am trying to give you an idea of what kind of jobs you can work with what you have at your disposal, namely a Bachelor's Degree in psychology and nothing else. A teaching assistant (or a TA for short) is a person who supports the teacher in the classroom. The duties of the job may vary from school to school. This job utilizes the psychology graduate's knowledge of learning styles, childhood and early development (depending on what grade you assist in teaching) and social psychology. According to payscale.com, you will make an average of $11.33/hour as a teaching assistant in Sacramento, CA. Go to google to search your potential salary in other localities.

2. Child Care Worker: A child care worker is a term used for a person who manages young people. I have worked as a child care worker in a group home with adolescent boys. This job paid me $9.50/hour which is a dollar more than minimum wage in California. The good thing is that these jobs are looking for people with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. You will find that you may not even need work experience as long as you have the degree. The bad thing is, it doesn't pay much although there are pay increases if you stick with the job long enough.

3. Social worker: As a social worker, your average wage would be $16.47/hour in Sacramento, CA according to payscale.com. A social worker is a professional who works with people to help them with emotional, financial, insurance and other resources that they may need during a critical period. For example, they may deal with runaway children, victims of abuse or sexual violence, people in poverty, etc.

4. Caregiver/Home health aide: I have done the job as well. Basically, the job entails that you support people in hospice or who are confined to their home due to illness. I worked primarily with the elderly. You may have duties such as giving a sponge bath, administering enemas, dispensing medication, rubbing ointment, supporting patient when they walk, light housekeeping, food preparation and others. According to payscale.com your the average wage for this position is $13.93/hour.

5. Human Resources Assistant: Human resource assistants keep records of a company's employees. Everyday they update information and answer questions about employees. They also may create reports for managers. Some human resource assistants answer the phone or open mail. Some help to hire workers. They sometimes to research on the internet to find qualified applicants for jobs. They call or write applicants to tell them whether or not they got the job. According to payscale.com human resource assistants make an average of $14.67/hour. You must have good computer skills for this job.

There are lots of other jobs that a person with a Bachelor's degree in psychology can do including:

  • Office Assistant for a Psychiatrist's office
  • Behavioral tutor for Children with Autism
  • Marketing Representative
  • Customer service representative
  • Call center representative

And many more. What are your opinions? Do you have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology? What type of jobs have you worked? Which jobs are the best? Leave a comment, and I'll be sure to reply! :-)

~::*EDIT*::~
I have to edit this article to include some excellent suggestions given by a commenter named "Kelly S". She advises people to try the following:

  • Community relations officer,
  • affirmative action officer,
  • recreation worker,
  • urban planning officer,
  • Personal Administration,
  • Advertising,
  • Health Educator,
  • Vocational Rehabilitation,
  • Psychiatric Assistant,
  • Director of Volunteer Service,
  • Public Statistician,
  • customs inspector,
  • Probation/parole officer,
  • Newspaper reporter in terms of socialogy/psychology related stories,
  • or daycare center supervisor.

I hope that helps! And I would like to add that in any position in which you are managing other people (e.g. manager, shift supervisor, etc.) you can color your resume with mentions of the fact that you studied human behavior and are skilled in conflict resolution, crisis management, groupthink and motivation.

Don't be discouraged by the lack of signs out there that specifically say "Psych Students Welcome". Sell yourself! Do your research! Figure out what kind of job you want to do and find out what it takes for you to get it. And just because the job you want is not available in your area, doesn't mean they're not available. Move if you have to!

The Average Salary With a Bachelor's in Nursing

    • The primary factor in deciding salaries for BSNs is the job title, since that dictates actual duties and responsibilities. For example, professional nurses, who commonly pursue this degree to improve their careers, make a median $56,234 per year. Directors of nursing, who are in charge of an entire department of subordinate health care professionals, earn the highest salaries at $78,347 annually. An RN in an operating room makes $66,063. This is higher than a standard RN, because those in operating rooms have the added responsibility of caring for surgical patients who may be in critical health situations. This is according to PayScale as of January 2011.

    Experience

    • Salaries increase with experience as BSNs develop more skill and understanding of their jobs and a wider reputation among other health care professionals.
